  • Clarins – Skin Illusion Tinted Moisturizer

I don’t always have time for a full makeup look, so I am always interested when a new tinted moisturizer or skin tint becomes available. I was pleasantly surprised to discover the new ClarinsSkin Illusion Tinted Moisturizer (Shade: 06) during my recent trip to Brown Thomas in Dublin.

    Product Description

A tinted moisturizer with sheer coverage and a natural, radiant finish.

    • SPF 25
    • Shade: 06 (medium deep)
    • Volume: 40 mL (1.35 fl.oz.)
    • Price: €43.00 (€1.08 per mL)

    What I likeWhat I dislike
Broad shade range with flexible, sheer pigmentsPills easily
    Sheer coverage tinted moisturizerNon-buildable coverage
    Natural, radiant finish

The ClarinsSkin Illusion Tinted Moisturizer has natural coverage pigments and a natural glow finish on the skin. The product feels like a thick cream that needs to be worked into the skin (I prefer to apply this with my fingers instead of a brush). Once applied, it feels lightweight and provides a natural, radiant glow.

Shade 06 works well with my medium deep undertone. When first applied, it appears to be too bright but blends into my medium deep skin tone well due to the sheer coverage. The slight peach undertone helps to correct and brighten under my eyes (for a no makeup day).

When applied in small amounts, this product absorbs quickly into the skin, does not transfer, and provides a radiant glow to the skin. This is my preferred application approach; therefore, I don’t rely on the sunscreen in this product and always apply a separate sunscreen. To me, this is more of a skincare-focused product with an element of natural complexion pigments.

When applied similar to a skin tint (with the aim to build coverage in certain areas), this product pills easily. It is not possible to build up the coverage with this product, it does not absorb well when in excess and transfers easily. I have tried this application approach multiple times, including lighter skincare routines, to try and reduce the pilling with no luck.

    Comparisons

This product reminds me of the ChantecailleJust Skin Tinted Moisturizer (Shade: Chestnut) and the ClarinsMilky Boost Cream (Shade: 07) in a few ways:

    • Cream formula
    • Natural, skin-like radiant finish

The ChantecailleJust Skin Tinted Moisturizer (Shade: Chestnut; Price: €72.00; €2.06 per mL) has a similar texture and finish on the skin, but has more coverage than the ClarinsSkin Illusion Tinted Moisturizer (sheer to medium buildable coverage). Both products include skincare and sunscreen ingredients; however, the two deepest shades of the ChantecailleJust Skin Tinted Moisturizer (Shades: Chestnut & Mahogany) do not include sunscreen. These two products also mix well together to give a sheer to medium coverage finish with a radiant glow; the peach undertone in the ClarinsSkin Illusion Tinted Moisturizer (Shade: 06) offsets the golden undertone in the ChantecailleJust Skin Tinted Moisturizer (Shade: Chestnut) for a perfect shade match.

The ClarinsMilky Boost Cream (Shade: 07; Price: €39.00; €0.87 per mL) has a mousse consistency with sheer to medium buildable coverage. Both products contain skincare ingredients; however, the ClarinsMilky Boost Cream does not contain sunscreen. I love the formula and finish of the ClarinsMilky Boost Cream; however, the shades were limited in this range and the closest shade to my skin tone was too yellow on my skin (I had to use this with bronzer to counter the yellow undertones).

    Conclusions

I like this product on “no makeup” days, mainly for natural glow finish. I love that you get the benefits of a skincare product, and that it also includes a natural, radiant finish (to slightly enhance your natural features). I don’t rely on the sunscreen in this product because I use small amounts due to it pilling easily on the skin. I think it’s a nice product for the Spring and Summer months when I don’t have time for makeup.

    Review

    What I likeWhat I dislike
Broad spectrum mineral sunscreenTakes a while to dry down/set
Sheer to medium buildable coverageTransfers easily
Easy to apply with fingers or a brushCurrently only available on Beauty of Joseon website
    Affordable

The product feels very lightweight. It’s quite glowy when first applied but becomes more of a natural glow when it dries down.

The product doesn’t feel oily, but when I touch my face it feels slightly emollient, like there’s product on my skin, and there’s a small amount of transfer from the pigments.

The dry down takes about 25 to 30 minutes when applied with a brush, which is a bit of an inconvenience at times (I have a bad habit of touching my face while I work). I use a generous amount of product all over my face because it is a sunscreen, which is probably why it takes so long to set. If you have normal to oily skin this will probably take longer to set.

While this product applied well using my fingers and a brush, I prefer a brush application because it’s quicker and cleaner. It works well applying with fingers but takes longer to blend and, since it’s a pigmented product, it can be messy. I think the dry down might be quicker when applied with fingers, but I have not tested this since I prefer to apply it with a brush now.

    Comparisons

This product reminds me of the both the Lisa EldridgeSeamless Skin Enhancing Tint (Shade: T12) and the Clarins – Tinted Oleo Serum (Shade: 08) in a few ways:

    • Fluid formula (both have a fluid consistency)
    • Sheer to medium buildable coverage
    • Natural, skin-like finish

While I have been loving the Lisa EldridgeSeamless Skin Enhancing Tint (Shade: T12; Price: €45.00; €1.50 per mL) since it was released in 2024, the Beauty of JoseonDaily Tinted Fluid Sunscreen has quickly become my new favourite. It has slightly more coverage, it’s a broad spectrum mineral sunscreen, and it’s more affordable.

The Clarins – Tinted Oleo Serum (Shade: 08; Price: €38.00; €0.76 per mL) also has a similar fluid consistency; however, absorbs quicker into the skin (probably since it’s more of a serum). I struggled to find a proper shade match (I find this to be a common occurrence with Clarins’ complexion products), with shade 08 being a bit too golden for my skin tone.

    Conclusions

I immediately liked this product since the first application and I have been using it almost every day. I love that you get both the benefits of a broad spectrum sunscreen and a glowy, tinted complexion product. I think it’s a great product for the Spring and Summer months, and also when you just want a minimal makeup look.

I will definitely purchase another but I am also curious to see how long the product lasts with (almost) every day use.
